Sweet Pepper
Zorza
Like its relative, the chili pepper, sweet pepper originated in South America and dates back to around 5000 BC. Like many other plants for this region sweet pepper seeds were carried throughout the world by Spanish and Portuguese explorers. Sweet peppers are plump, bell shaped vegetables that come in many different colours, green, red, yellow, orange, purple, brown and black. Known scientifically as Capsicum annum they are members of the nightshade family which also includes potatoes, tomatoes and eggplants. Sweet pepper fruit usually features three or four lobes but there are also varieties that have a more tapered shape and no distinguishing lobes. Sweet pepper fruits range in size from two to five inches in diameter and two to six inches in length. Inside the thick flesh is an inner cavity with edible bitter seeds and a white spongy core. Sweet peppers have a delightful crunchy texture and a delicate flavour. Green and purple varities have a tangy almost bitter flavour, while the red, orange and yellows are sweeter bordering on fruity. Sweet pepper Zorza is early fruiting variety with a superb taste and fruits that mature from cream to bright red.
