Product Information

 SHETLAND BLACK

 Seed Potatoes

A second early variety native to the Shetland Islands and traditionally believed to have been picked up from a Spanish Armada shipwreck although there is no firm evidence of this.

Shetland Black seed potatoes produce heavy crops of small to medium sized long or oval shaped tubers with a very dark purple almost black mottled skin and shallow eyes.

Flesh is pale yellow with a distinctive dark vascular ring.

Texture is floury and Shetland Black seed potatoes make excellent chips or roast potatoes.

When compared to modern supermarket varieties the tubers may appear small but this is more than made up with the delicious and unique flavour.

This dark skin of Shetland Black seed potatoes is said to provide quite a challenge when harvesting the crop in dark soils.

A heritage variety, this old and very rare potato has returned to the market with the aid of modern technology.

Our Shetland Black seed potatoes are supplied as Scottish certified seed.

 Pack 5 Tubers.

Due to the nature of the goods we cannot accept any responsibility for their failure after planting as pests, disease, poor horticultural practice, extremes of weather and many other factors outside our control all take their toll. Goods will only be accepted for return after seller has been informed and given permission for their return.  A valid reason for return must be quoted. Refunds will only be issued when items are received back in saleable condition within 14 days from original despatch date. Buyer must pay all return charges except where an item has been despatched in error.

We ask all our buyers to please remember plants are living items and their appearance changes with the seasons. This is quite normal and not a matter for any worry or concern, your plants will look great during the growing season. Please don’t panic if a plant looks different to the image on the website. It is likely to be in perfect condition for the time of year and just ‘resting’ before it bursts into action in the coming season. Plants do look very different throughout the year. Particularly in winter, many shrubs lose their leaves and will look rather bare and stick-like and from August onwards many perennial plants may not even be showing above the soil.
