Product Information

BLACKCURRANT

Ben Tirran

Ben Tirran is a new and distinct form of cultivar.

It has a vigorous yet compact growth habit and Blackcurrant Ben Tirran also shows good resistance to mildew.

Flowering very late, the berries also mature late hence the good resistance to frosts.

Good crops of large glossy black berries can be expected.

The juicy fruit can be used fresh or  preserved.

Ben Tirran will grow in any reasonable garden soil but avoid very dry sites.

Height after 10 years 140cms Spread 140cms.

Blackcurrants will tolerate poor drainage better than most other soft fruits, but they do need organic rich soil and shelter for the wind.

Full sun is preferred but light shade will not cause a problem.

Mulch well after planting and renew this mulch every year in April, garden compost or well rotted farm yard manure is preferred for this task.

About a month before mulching spread approx. 4 oz of a good general fertilizer around each bush and also apply a potassium rich liquid feed in summer when the fruits are swelling.

Water well in dry weather.

CARE OF BARE-ROOT PLANTS

Plants need to be unpacked on delivery and if not to be planted immediately should be placed in a shallow trench and the roots completely covered with moist sand or soil. Plants treated in this manner can be held for quite some time.

When ordering please keep in mind that delivery dates may vary a little if weather or harvest conditions are difficult.
