Product Information

Also known as Balkan Clary or Woodland Sage.

A clump forming hardy herbaceous perennial native to Central Europe and Western Asia.

Salvia Caradonna forms low compact mounds of roughish, narrow, grey-green aromatic foliage and from May to September dark purple or black stems rise above the leaves and bear slender spikes of deep violet blue nectar rich flowers.

With a height and spread of only 50cm x 45cm Salvia Caradonna has many uses, it looks wonderful in the border where it will bloom away all summer, it is also great when used to under-plant roses or other shrubs and in the Wildlife Garden the nectar rich flowers are appreciated by the bees and other insects and birds.

The flowers spikes are great for cutting and last well in the vase and if you need a splash of colour in a container or a raised bed or a gravel garden Salvia Caradonna will happily oblige.

Deadhead on a regular basis to encourage longer flowering.

This attractive plant prefers a sunny but sheltered spot with moist, well-drained, fertile, humus rich soil.

Fully hardy, Salvia Caradonna is reputed to be drought tolerant when fully established.

Plants should be cut to ground level in autumn once flowering has finished and an annual mulch of well-rotted farmyard manure or garden compost is recommended.

East to grow and propagate Salvia Caradonna has been overlooked, dare I say ridiculed by many gardeners for years but is now enjoying a wonderful revival thanks to modern garden designers.

Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit (AGM).

Pictures used are of mature plants in bloom and may not necessarily reflect plants at this time of year.

Our plants are despatched ex. 9cm pot and are ready to plant in their final growing positions.

We ask all our buyers to remember plants are living items and their appearance changes with the seasons.  Please don’t panic if the plant you receive looks different to the image on the website. This is quite normal and not a matter for any worry or concern, it is likely to be in perfect condition for the time of year and just enjoying a well-earned rest before bursting into action for the new season. Particularly in autumn and winter many shrubs will lose their leaves and look rather bare, gaunt and stick-like and from August onwards many perennial plants may not even be showing above the soil.

We want you to be happy with your purchase and all our items are checked and inspected visually before packing. In the unlikely event of a problem please advise us within 48hrs of delivery. Due to the nature of the goods we cannot accept any responsibility for their failure after planting as pests, disease, poor horticultural practice, extremes of weather and many other factors outside our control all take their toll. Goods will only be accepted for return after seller has been informed and given permission for their return.  Refunds will be issued when items are received back in saleable condition within 14 days from original despatch date. Buyer must pay all return charges except where an item has been despatched in error.
