Product Information

Bronze Baby

Known almost universally as New Zealand Flax.

A clump-forming evergreen perennial with broad, upright, gently arching leaves that curve gracefully at the tips.

.The beautiful, dark reddish-bronze architectural type foliage ensures that Phormium Bronze Baby is a very striking plant.

A compact variety growing only about 600cms tall it is not the tallest phormium available but this excellent cultivar with its bold, elegantly weeping coloured foliage makes a real impact in the garden.

Mature plants very occasionally carry spikes of splendid, tubular, red flowers in summer followed by sturdy seed heads in autumn.

Very versatile, Bronze Baby is happy in a variety of planting schemes, its graceful arching foliage cascading downwards makes it perfect as a centrepiece in a container but it is also at home as a specimen in the border or gravel garden and when used as a contrast in form and texture to other shrubs and perennials it is simply stunning.

It is also ideal as a colourful, low maintenance pot or container plant to provide year round interest on a patio or courtyard.

Phormium Bronze Baby is very suitable for coastal locations and excels in many other contemporary and tropical planting schemes as well.

Prefers a site in full sun or partial shade with moist but free draining soil or compost.

When allowed to develop into large clumps these handsome plants make fabulous specimens and can become marvellous focal points.

This beautiful New Zealand Flax can withstand temperatures down to -10C and is hardy in most parts of the UK but it may suffer foliage damage and stem dieback in extremely harsh winters or in exposed northern locations.

All pictures used are of mature plants and may not necessarily reflect plants at all times of the year.

Our plants are dispatched approx. 30cm tall ex.10 cm pots and are ready to plant in their final growing positions but they may benefit from growing on for a short period in a slightly larger container.

We ask all our buyers to remember plants are living items and their appearance changes with the seasons.  Please don’t panic if the plant you receive looks different to the image on the website. This is quite normal and not a matter for any worry or concern, it is likely to be in perfect condition for the time of year and just enjoying a well-earned rest before bursting into action for the new season. Particularly in autumn and winter many shrubs will lose their leaves and look rather bare, gaunt and stick-like and from August onwards many perennial plants may not even be showing above the soil.

We want you to be happy with your purchase and all our items are checked and inspected visually before packing. In the unlikely event of a problem please advise us within 48hrs of delivery. Due to the nature of the goods we cannot accept any responsibility for their failure after planting as pests, disease, poor horticultural practice, extremes of weather and many other factors outside our control all take their toll. Goods will only be accepted for return after seller has been informed and given permission for their return.  Refunds will be issued when items are received back in saleable condition within 14 days from original despatch date. Buyer must pay all return charges except where an item has been dispatched in error.
