Product Information

Native to North and Central America Penstemon are related to both Snapdragons and Foxgloves and seem to have been around since time began.

One of the most valuable and colourful of late summer flowering perennials they are easy to grow and are reliable in all but the coldest areas of the country.

Penstemon will grow and thrive in any fertile, reasonably moist, free-draining soil in full sun or dappled shade.

Almost oblivious to rain and drought tolerant once established they are resistant to slugs and many other garden pests but are highly attractive to butterflies and bees.

Czar is an outstanding variety bred by the late Edward Wilson in Pensham, Worcs. which has become very popular for patio containers but can also be grown in beds.

Space plants approx. 12 inches apart in a sheltered site.

The delightful purple or plum coloured tubular flowers have clear white throats and bloom right through from mid-summer to the first frosts.

Once blooms have faded spent flower stalks should be removed, this encourages the production of new shoots and flower spikes.

To promote strong growth apply a good general fertilizer in spring and mulch well.

Supplied as well grown jumbo plug plants which can be planted direct into containers or grown on for a short time in 9 or 10cm pots before planting in beds.
