Product Information

Paeonies are the aristocrats of the herbaceous perennial world. The flower stalks rise up above the attractive foliage and each one bears several blooms, blooms which make most other garden flowers blush with shame. “Rubra Plena” is the one that everybody knows or remembers, granny’s cottage garden peony, deep red double blooms with satiny, ruffled petals in May. The first to bloom in late spring, the flowers can be up to 4 inches across and best given some support as the large flowers are extremely heavy. Regard paeonies as a long term investment and learn the rules before you start planting. Choose an open, sunny spot but try to avoid a situation where early morning sun will shine on the plants. Autumn/Spring is the best time for planting and the soil should be deeply dug and enriched with compost. Set the crown of the plant no lower than 1 inch below the soil surface. The main thing you then have to remember is to leave the plant alone - it may not flower in the first season and will not be properly established for three years. Once planted avoid transplanting at all costs and do not try to divide clumps to increase your stock. The cultural rules are quite straightforward, mulch in spring, stake the stems, water when the weather is dry, dead-head faded blooms, feed with a general fertilizer in late summer and cut down the stems to ground level in autumn. Known as the 'Memorial Day Peony' in the U.S. a very popular peony and frequently spotted around older homesteads. An excellent cut flower variety, it is known as one of those plants that graced grandmother's garden. Will grow to about 2ft. (60cms) and flowers late April-June.

 Plants supplied as bare-root crowns.
