Product Information

Black Magic

A tender clump forming perennial perhaps better known as Black Elephant Ears.

Deep, dark purple almost black stalks a metre or more high majestically suspend dramatic, black, heart-shaped leaves which are often two feet or more long.

The bottom side of these huge leaves is covered with a chalky-looking bloom and this gives them an intriguing grey appearance.

Imposing and very stylish the dark leaves provide a wonderful backdrop for other brightly coloured flowers and also gives the garden an exotic look and feel.

Excellent in the foliage garden where it makes a majestic architectural specimen.

Arguably the most stunning of the family, Colocasia Black Magic is a real show stopper, guaranteed to halt you in your tracks.

Prefers a slightly acid soil but it is a very thirsty plant and thrives in wet or boggy conditions even in the margins of pond but if planting in water ensure the crown sits above water level.

Adaptable enough to be successfully grown in a large container but again moisture is the key and attention must be paid to watering.

The roots will not tolerate heavy frost so if growing outdoors in colder areas the tubers need to be lifted in autumn as soon as the foliage has died back and stored in damp peat or sand in a frost free place for the winter.

Container grown plants can simply be moved to a frost free site for the winter months.

Originally found in the Philippines Colocasia Black Magic is best in full sun but can tolerate partial shade and will reach a metre or more high by a metre wide.

Juvenile leaves sometimes emerge green but rapidly change colour as they mature.

All pictures used are of mature plants and may not necessarily reflect plants at all times of the year.

Our Colocasia Black Magic plants are supplied ex. 11cm pots, packed and boxed to help avoid damage in transit. They can be planted out immediately but better results may be obtained if they are grown on for a short time in a slightly larger container before transplanting to their final growing positions

Multiple purchases attract discounts

If ordering a number of items please email us at before paying and we will send an invoice by return.

We ask all our buyers to remember plants are living items and their appearance changes with the seasons.  Please don’t panic if the plant you receive looks different to the image on the website. This is quite normal and not a matter for any worry or concern, it is likely to be in perfect condition for the time of year and just enjoying a well-earned rest before bursting into action for the new season. Particularly in autumn and winter many shrubs will lose their leaves and look rather bare, gaunt and stick-like and from August onwards many perennial plants may not even be showing above the soil.

We want you to be happy with your purchase and all our items are checked and inspected visually before packing. In the unlikely event of a problem please advise us within 48hrs of delivery. Due to the nature of the goods we cannot accept any responsibility for their failure after planting as pests, disease, poor horticultural practice, extremes of weather and many other factors outside our control all take their toll. Goods will only be accepted for return after seller has been informed and given permission for their return.  Refunds will be issued when items are received back in saleable condition within 14 days from original despatch date. Buyer must pay all return charges except where an item has been despatched in error.
