CAREX
Buchananii
Native to New Zealand and also know as Leatherleaf Sedge or New Zealand Sedge.
This wonderful evergreen perennial grass has unique colouring and forms a dense tussock or tuft of foliage which is ideal for planting on the edge of a mixed border
An unusual grass with fine textured bronze coloured arching leaves and just the slightest tint of reddish-pink in summer.
The narrow, triangular leaves or blades have curling tips and bend gracefully in even the gentlest of breezes.
Interesting silver grey flower spikes are produced from July to September and when mature these arch and sway under the weight of seed-heads.
This prolongs the interest of the plant well into the autumn or early winter.
Versatile and adaptable, Carex buchananii is tolerant of almost all soil types, even boggy and can willing cope with full sun or partial shade but thrives best in moist, fertile soil and dappled shade.
Its uses are wide and varied, can be used as specimen and underplanted with low growing or creeping groundcover, is superb when planted at the edge of a border where the seed-heads can droop lazily over the lawn, awesome when block planted and can even be used as a centre piece in pots and containers.
Normally pest and disease resistant and being evergreen is therefore very low maintenance.
