ASTILBE
Fanal
One of the mainstays of damp, shaded or woodland gardens Astilbe is also known as False Goats Beard or False Spiraea.
Astilbes fill the garden with beauty like no other flower, the showy panicles or plumes of feathery flowers that are the trademark of Astilbe can be up to 50cm long and the lush filigree foliage helps make this plant a magnificant sight.
The serrated dark green feathery fern-like foliage of Astilbe Fanal unfurls in spring and is followed in June by fluffy plumes of long-lasting deep red or crimson flowers.
The flower plumes of Fanal are reputed to be the tallest of all astilbes
Although Astilbe can tolerate some sun they thrive best when planted in a damp shaded border or beside water.
To help maintain vigour the clumps should be dug up, divided and replanted every three years.
Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
