Bighead knapweed is known by various names in different parts of the world including Yellow Hardhat, Lemon Fluff, Basket Flower, Giant Knapweed, Great Golden Knapweed, Globe Centaurea, Golden Thistle and Globe Coneflower. Blooms June-August, on upright, unbranched stems. Each stem carries a single globe shaped yellow flower-head which may be up to three inches in diameter. Approx 100cm tall it is an excellent plant for the back of the border and can also be used as a cut flower in both fresh and dried arrangements. Leaves are lance shaped with toothed edges and pointed tips. They have a rough surface and grow in a rosette like shape. Drought-tolerant, this plant is attractive to bees, butterflies and some birds. Delivered well grown in 3cm x 3cm plugs which do best if grown on in 9 or 10cm pots for a short time before planting out.
