Product Information

Perhaps better known as green privet and probably the commonest of all cultivated shrubs.

The oval leaves are approx. 2 inches long, dark glossy green on top but are a much lighter and duller shade on the bottom side.

Described as semi-evergreen it may lose some or all of its leaves in a severe winter but these grow right back again in spring.

In July-August Ligustrum ovalifolium carries clusters of small creamy/white flowers with a unique pungent fragrance followed by small, round black fruits which are beloved by many birds.

The flowers are also attractive to butterflies and many other beneficial insects.

It is fast growing at 30-60cm per year but responds well to heavy clipping.

Will grow in any well drained soil in full sun or dense shade.

It has a high pollution tolerance and this makes it a very popular choice for hedging in urban gardens.

Fully hardy and almost indestructible when established.

When planting a hedge we recommend 4 plants to the metre.

Illustrations used are of mature plants and may not necessarily reflect the plant at all times of the year.

Plants are supplied ex. 10cm pots and can be planted out immediately.

These pot grown Privet transplant much better than bare-root plants and therefore establish much quicker.

If ordering a number of items please email us at before paying and we will send an Invoice by return.

We ask all our buyers to remember plants are living items and their appearance changes with the seasons.  Please don’t panic if the plant you receive looks different to the image on the website. This is quite normal and not a matter for any worry or concern, it is likely to be in perfect condition for the time of year. Particularly in autumn and winter many shrubs will lose their leaves and look rather bare, gaunt and stick-like and from August onwards many perennial plants may not even be showing above the soil.

We want you to be happy with your plants and all our items are checked and inspected visually before packing. In the unlikely event of a problem please notify us at within 48hrs of delivery. Due to the nature of the goods we cannot accept any responsibility for their failure after planting as pests, disease, poor horticultural practice, extremes of weather and many other factors outside our control all take their toll. Goods will only be accepted for return after seller has been informed and given permission for their return.  The reason for return must be quoted. Refunds will be issued when items are returned in saleable condition, in their original packaging and within 14 days from original despatch date. Buyer must pay all return charges except where an item has been despatched in error.
