Product Information

 FAGUS

purpurea

or

Copper Beech

A native plant with attractive, glossy, wavy-edged leaves which is also occasionally known as Purple Beech

Grown extensively as a hedge but if given space and time Fagus purpurea or Copper Beech will grow into a majestic tree which may eventually reach almost 30 metres.

In spring the new leaves emerge a soft reddish colour before maturing to a rich, deep purple in summer.

The foliage changes again in autumn this time to a delightful shade of copper before turning russet brown in winter.

Although Fagus purpurea or Copper Beech is not evergreen the dry, crispy brown leaves are normally retained on the plant throughout the winter and only fall when the new leaves begin to appear in spring.

Makes an attractive formal hedge with minimal maintenance and is simply superb when used as a backdrop for green plants or lawns.

Plants or hedges that are clipped annually in late summer hold their leaves better in winter.

Prefers a well-drained site and is not suitable for wet or heavy soils, it also dislikes shade and should never be planted in a frost pocket.

For a strong, dense, stock-proof hedge Fagus sylvatica or Copper Beech should be planted in a staggered double row at the rate of five plants per metre with 35-40cm between the rows and this will give privacy and year round shelter.

Planted in this manner it will grow 30-50cm per year and will eventually reach around 2 metres.

These plants are all seed grown and you may find the occasional rogue green plant in your pack, if you want a completely purple hedge we suggest you order a few extra plants and grow them on so you can remove and replace any green intruders.

We despatch Fagus sylvatica or Copper Beech plants as well grown 40-60cm, bare root whips ready to plant.

Please keep in mind that delivery dates may vary a little if weather or harvest conditions are difficult.

CARE OF BARE-ROOT PLANTS

Fagus sylvatica or Copper Beech should be unpacked on delivery and if not to be planted immediately should be placed in a shallow trench and the roots completely covered with moist sand or soil.

Multiple purchases attract discounts

If ordering a number of items please email us at sales@sycamoretrading.co.uk before paying and we will send an Invoice by return.

We ask all our buyers to remember plants are living items and their appearance changes with the seasons.  Please don’t panic if the plant you receive looks different to the image on the website. This is quite normal and not a matter for any worry or concern, it is likely to be in perfect condition for the time of year and just enjoying a well-earned rest before bursting into action for the new season. Particularly in autumn and winter many shrubs will lose their leaves and look rather bare, gaunt and stick-like and from August onwards many perennial plants may not even be showing above the soil.

We want you to be happy with your purchase and all our items are checked and inspected visually before packing. In the unlikely event of a problem please advise us at sales@sycamoretrading.co.uk  within 48hrs of delivery. Due to the nature of the goods we cannot accept any responsibility for their failure after planting as pests, disease, poor horticultural practice, extremes of weather and many other factors outside our control all take their toll. Goods will only be accepted for return after seller has been informed and given permission for their return.  Refunds will be issued when items are received back in saleable condition within 14 days from original despatch date. Buyer must pay all return charges except where an item has been despatched in error.
