Product Information

A large, dense, deciduous, native shrub or small bushy tree with dark thorny branches.

Officially called Prunus spinosa but much better known by its common names.

In March and early April before the leaves emerge the branches of Blackthorn or Sole bushes are quite literally smothered with small, white flowers.

Leaves are mid to dark green oval shaped and are generally 2-4cm long.

The profusion of spring blossom is followed in autumn by an abundance of small damson like, edible fruit known as sloes.

Dull blue at first but later maturing to shinning black these very bitter tasting fruits have many culinary uses, they are used in preserves, to make wine and also for flavouring gin but are too tart to eat raw although they do sweeten after they have been heavily frosted.

The wood also provides us with the traditional (some say the best) walking sticks and in Ireland the very best shillalahs are also made from Blackthorn or Sloe branches.

Blackthorn or Sloe will grow and thrive almost anywhere, on chalk, on heavy soil, on poor soil, in windswept situations, in costal locations but it has an intense dislike for waterlogged soils or heavy shade preferring a site in full sun instead.

Planted in a single row 60cm apart it makes an excellent hedge and due to the vicious thorns on its branches is all but impenetrable.

Left untrimmed the bushes will reach around 5 metres tall but it takes well to be being pruned and you can therefore keep your hedge at any height you desire.

The density of the bush provides excellent shelter for birds and the RHS has recently recommended Blackthorn or Sloe as an excellent source of nectar for bees and many other beneficial insects.

We despatch our bushes as well grown 40-60cm, bare root whips ready to plant.

Please keep in mind that delivery dates may vary a little if weather or harvest conditions are difficult.

Blackthorn or Sloe whips should be unpacked on delivery and if not to be planted immediately should be placed in a shallow trench and the roots completely covered with moist sand or soil and kept damp.

Multiple purchases attract discounts

If ordering a number of items please email us at before paying and we will send an Invoice by return.

We ask all our buyers to remember plants are living items and their appearance changes with the seasons.  Please don’t panic if the plant you receive looks different to the image on the website. This is quite normal and not a matter for any worry or concern, it is likely to be in perfect condition for the time of year and just enjoying a well-earned rest before bursting into action for the new season. Particularly in autumn and winter many shrubs will lose their leaves and look rather bare, gaunt and stick-like and from August onwards many perennial plants may not even be showing above the soil.

We want you to be happy with your purchase and all our items are checked and inspected visually before packing. In the unlikely event of a problem please advise us at  within 48hrs of delivery. Due to the nature of the goods we cannot accept any responsibility for their failure after planting as pests, disease, poor horticultural practice, extremes of weather and many other factors outside our control all take their toll. Goods will only be accepted for return after seller has been informed and given permission for their return.  Refunds will be issued when items are received back in saleable condition within 14 days from original despatch date. Buyer must pay all return charges except where an item has been despatched in error.
