Product Information

 URGINEA

maritima

This one has acquired many common names over the years, Sea Squill, Giant White Squill, Scilla maritima are only some of many.

Native to eastern Mediterranean areas and in the wild despite its common name Urginea maritima can be found growing anywhere from the sea shore to the mountains slopes.

The huge bulbs often up to 20cms and more produce clumps of fleshy, blueish green, strap-like leaves up to 100cm tall from November to May.

After the leaves have died away the flower spikes appear (usually around September), very tall often 3- 5 feet, straight at first but as the mature they develop the twists and curls so beloved by florists.

Each spike carries a mass of small star shaped white flowers with showy yellow centres and green stamens.

Prefers a site in full sun with stony free draining soil but is equally happy in large pots and containers.

Will need some protection in winter from excessive wet conditions or hard frosts.

The fabulous flowers of Urginea maritime will create a real talking point and is sure to give your garden the “Wow” factor.

Difficult to find and very rarely offered in the U.K.

We ask all our buyers to please remember plants are living items and their appearance changes with the seasons. Please don’t panic if a plant looks different to the image on the website. It is likely to be in perfect condition for the time of year and just ‘resting’ before it bursts into action in the coming season. In autumn and winter many shrubs lose their leaves and will look rather bare and stick-like and from August onwards the foliage on many perennial plants will have died back and there may be nothing showing above the soil. This is quite normal and not a matter for panic or worry, your plants will look great during the growing season.
