Product Information

Despite its name this plant does not come from either Peru or Cuba. Originating in Southern Spain and Portugal it was named after the ship that brought the first bulbs to the U.K. A boat called “The Peru”. Another of its common names “Portuguese Squill” is more of a hint to its origins. A dramatic plant with huge candle shaped heads of deep violet blue flowers and low broad fleshy leaves which are almost evergreen. Flowers have been known to last up to 8 weeks. Especially dramatic in bud, this easily grown bulb adds greatly to the richness of the spring tapestry in the garden Flowering in May/June around 10 inches tall “Scilla peruviana” provides a welcome splash of blue early in the season. Easy to grow, plant 4" deep and 10" apart in sandy or well-drained soil in full sun and good light. Needs a brief dry dormancy period in July. Very hardy, it also makes a fantastic container plant but need good well drained compost. A very old plant, first described by Linnaeus in the 1700’s it is not a good choice as a cut flower but it is a stunning addition to any garden.
