Gladioli are showy, frost tender, summer/autumn flowering plants, suitable for borders and for cutting. For all those sites where tall gladoili are simply too much of a good thing, these butterfly-type offer a shorter, more compact, smaller flowered plant. Flowering at approx 26-28” no staking is required and they are just right for tucking between bushy perennials in the middle of the garden. Plant can be planted from March until the end of June at a depth of approx. 4”. Avoid frost when planting and they will flower from July to September. For a garden aflutter with colour give them a try and for best effect plant in groups of 5 or more. In milder regions the corms can often be left in the ground over the winter if given a thick mulch and providing the soil is well-drained. Otherwise, once the foliage has died back they should be lifted, cleaned, dried, dusted with fungicide and stored in a dry frost free location. Taking up comparatively little space at ground level for the considerable impact they achieve, if the large flowered types are too stiff for your taste, the butterfly option is both subtle and elegant.
