COLCHICUM
The Giant
Colchicum, a member of the lily family is often called autumn-flowering crocus but they are also known as Naked Ladies because in most species the flowers appear long before the foliage develops.
Sometimes referred to as Meadow Saffron the bulbs have been known to produce as many as 30 of the most magnificent flowers every year.
Introduced around 1925 or 1926 and as the name suggests Colchicum The Giant is one of the tallest and most free-flowering of the species and is now considered an heirloom variety.
Produces stunning mauve/pink blooms with a white base.
The large flowers are followed in spring by equally large tulip like leaves.
Very easy to grow, they will even produce beautiful flowers without needing any soil or water simply place the bulb on a window sill and leave to bloom, after flowering plant it in the garden.
Plant 8-10 cm deep in light shade preferably in rich well drained soil.
Colchicums sometimes sulk and refuse to grow the first year after planting but don't give up on them just because you don't see flowers immediately or foliage the first spring.
They have become increasingly popular because they will naturalise if left undisturbed and it is now hard to imagine autumn without the magical appearance of Colchicums.
