NECTAROSCORDUM
A deciduous bulbous perennial with long slender keeled garlic-scented leaves.
In early summer tall leafless stems often over one metre high are topped by hanging clusters of as many as thirty nodding bell shaped waxy flowers.
These white or creamy flowers are flushed with pink or burgundy and are tinted green at the base.
Spectacular in bloom someone once described Nectaroscordum as “the classy laid-back cousin of the ornamental allium”
A curious effect is seen after the flowers have been fertilised, as the seed pods form the stalks stiffen and turn upwards giving the seed-heads a shuttlecock appearance.
The seed heads dry well and are much in demand from flower arrangers for use in dried arrangements
Native to France and Italy this frost hardy bulb requires a sunny well drained site although it will tolerate some shade.
The flower, the seed-head and the leaves all make a valuable contribution in the garden but Nectaroscordum does not like too much competition.
