Product Information

Black Tower

Perhaps better known as Tower Elder or Black Tower.

An outstanding large shrub or small tree with an upright, columnar habit.

Foliage opens green in spring but when grown it full sun the leaves quickly turn a beautiful deep dark shade of burgundy purple.

In early summer the dusky leaves are complemented by big, flattened sprays of small pink flowers with large red anthers and a delicate musk like perfume.

The flowers are replaced in late June by small glossy purple-black elderberries, these are very attractive to birds and are also prized by wine makers.

Dense and compact this striking Elder with its upright habit makes a dramatic stand-alone statement but it is also ideal for adding contrast and interest to the shrub border.

To achieve the best foliage and colour grow in full sun, cut the plant back to ground level each year in early spring and apply a generous mulch of well-rotted garden compost or farmyard manure.

Prefers a humus-rich, moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil.

Sambucus nigra Black Tower is fully hardy and comparatively trouble free making it suitable for planting anywhere in the U.K. or Ireland.

Growing just 2.5m tall and around 1m wide this deciduous, easy to grow shrub will make a memorable feature in even the smallest of gardens.

Illustrations used are of mature plants and may not necessarily reflect the plant at all times of the year.

Plants are supplied ex. 9cm pots and best results are obtained by growing them on for a short time in a slightly larger container before planting in their final growing positions.

We ask all our buyers to remember plants are living items and their appearance changes with the seasons.  Please don’t panic if the plant you receive looks different to the image on the website. This is quite normal and not a matter for any worry or concern, it is likely to be in perfect condition for the time of year and just enjoying a well-earned rest before bursting into action for the new season. Particularly in autumn and winter many shrubs will lose their leaves and look rather bare, gaunt and stick-like and from August onwards many perennial plants may not even be showing above the soil.

We want you to be happy with your purchase and all our items are checked and inspected visually before packing. In the unlikely event of a problem please advise us within 48hrs of delivery. Due to the nature of the goods we cannot accept any responsibility for their failure after planting as pests, disease, poor horticultural practice, extremes of weather and many other factors outside our control all take their toll. Goods will only be accepted for return after seller has been informed and given permission for their return.  Refunds will be issued when items are received back in saleable condition within 14 days from original despatch date. Buyer must pay all return charges except where an item has been despatched in error.
