CORNUS
sanguinea
Midwinter Fire
Commonly known as Dogwood
This excellent new variety was discovered by H. Venhorst around 1980 in a German garden.
The young stems are bright orange-yellow with just a hint of red from early autumn through to early spring and as the new leaves begin to appear the stems turn a yellowish-green,
Cornus Midwinter Fire’s bright green leaves turn a brilliant yellow in autumn before falling.
Flat cymes of white flowers are borne in summer followed by dull dark blue or blackish fruit.
Grows particularly well near water and combines well with other dogwoods with contrasting stem colours but is also very effective when grown in front of a dark background.
Perfect for providing a bold splash of colour to the garden in the winter.
A very robust or vigorous shrub that will tolerate a wide range of soils but prefers a moist location.
Best winter colour is obtained when grown in full sun and the plant is pruned down to 2-3 buds above ground level in spring.
Cornus sanguinea Midwinter Fire can also be used as a hedging plant and rarely exceeds 2 metres.
