Product Information

Hinton Seedling

Often called and perhaps better known as Flowering Maple or Parlour Maple.

Abutilon is also sometimes referred to as Chinese Lantern.

A gorgeous, semi-evergreen ornamental shrub with a height and spread rarely exceeding 7ft. x 7ft.

An excellent Abutilon, Hinton Seedling is a lax, compact shrub with soft green triangular leaves.

Very free flowering it carries bell like flowers 4.0-4.5 cm long with apricot/orange petals on long stalks in summer and autumn and sometimes even into early winter.

Some growers claim to be able to keep the plant in bloom for 11 months of the year by moving it to a conservatory in winter.

Although it will tolerate light shade Abutilon Hinton Seedling does best in full sun but needs a warm, well sheltered position in the garden. A south or west facing wall would be ideal.

Any reasonable fertile garden soil is suitable but it does need a good supply of water during the growing season.

Not a recognised climber but can be trained to grow on a trellis or against a wall.

Reputed to be a little hardier than many other Abutilons but its tolerance of cold winds and frost only goes so far and it advised that it should only be allowed to remain outside in milder regions of the U.K. and even then it still needs some winter protection.

In all other U.K. regions it is best moved to a frost free area for the winter months.

Any trimming or pruning necessary should be done immediately after flowering.

All pictures used are of mature plants in full bloom and may not necessarily reflect plants at all times of the year.

Our plants are supplied ex. 7cm pots, they can be planted out immediately but better results will be obtained if they are grown on for a short time in a slightly larger container before transplanting to their final growing positions

We ask all our buyers to remember plants are living items and their appearance changes with the seasons.  Please don’t panic if the plant you receive looks different to the image on the website. This is quite normal and not a matter for any worry or concern, it is likely to be in perfect condition for the time of year and just enjoying a well-earned rest before bursting into action for the new season. Particularly in autumn and winter many shrubs will lose their leaves and look rather bare, gaunt and stick-like and from August onwards many perennial plants may not even be showing above the soil.

We want you to be happy with your purchase and all our items are checked and inspected visually before packing. In the unlikely event of a problem please advise us within 48hrs of delivery. Due to the nature of the goods we cannot accept any responsibility for their failure after planting as pests, disease, poor horticultural practice, extremes of weather and many other factors outside our control all take their toll. Goods will only be accepted for return after seller has been informed and given permission for their return.  Refunds will be issued when items are received back in saleable condition within 14 days from original despatch date. Buyer must pay all return charges except where an item has been despatched in error.
